Alex Lopez Surfboards

Alex Lopez is one of the most down to earth and humble shapers in the game, operating out of Oceanside, California with a quiet confidence and a deeply thoughtful approach to board design. He is the son of Gerry Lopez, Mr. Pipeline himself, though Alex is the last person to bring that up, preferring to earn his own stripes as a surfer and shaper.

Inspired by some of San Diego's finest shapers including legendary Rich Pavel and functional futurist Ryan Burch, Alex shapes every board by hand and combines a refined set of templates with a modern perspective on what good surfing should feel like. Depending on the time of year you can find him building boards in Japan, Hawaii, France, and Bali, traveling the world with his tools and templates.

His boards are the kind made for a surfer who wants to keep a surfboard, to get to know it, ride it for years, and form a real relationship with it. His partner Leah Dawson has been a key test pilot, her feedback helping keep the boards honest and responsive to how people actually want to surf. Quietly building one of the most exciting bodies of work in alternative surfboard shaping today, Alex Lopez is very much his own thing.
