About
Founded in 1954 by the legendary Hobie Alter, Hobie Surfboards is basically the OG of the surf world. Hobie started out shaping 9 foot balsa boards for his friends out of his family's Laguna Beach garage in 1950 Wikipedia, and what started as a backyard hobby turned into one of the most iconic brands in surf history.
In 1958, Hobie and his buddy Gordon "Grubby" Clark literally invented the polyurethane foam surfboard, producing boards that were lighter, faster, and easier to ride than anything else in the water. Hobie The timing was perfect too, because surfing was about to explode in popularity and Hobie was right there leading the charge.
At their peak, the Hobie Surf Team was stacked with some of the greatest surfers to ever do it, including Phil Edwards, Joey Cabell, Corky Carroll, Mickey Munoz, and Joyce Hoffman. Hobie And while pretty much every other major brand from that era faded out with the shortboard revolution, Hobie kept going Surf Museum Hawaii, which honestly says everything you need to know about how solid the brand is. Still hand shaping boards today, still carrying that same legacy forward.
